A Somewhat Special Seventies Scirocco

The Scirocco was Volkswagen’s sporty car offering after the retirement of the long-lived Karmann Ghia in the mid 1970s.  It was based on the same platform as the Rabbit, so it offered front-wheel drive and four-cylinder engines; but the Giugiaro-styled body was unique and the chassis had many upgrades to offer a more sporting drive.  Although no mechanical upgrades were included, VW USA did offer some special editions over the years, mostly utilizing paint schemes and other cosmetic goodies.

Our feature car is a 1978 Scirocco Sidewinder II and originally had a blacked-out, “low glare” hood and black stripes to go with its deep front air dam and sport seats.  Now, however, this one is a bit confused.  Is it a track car or a street car?  Maybe the answer lies in the fact that is was a project car for a speed shop of some sort back in the day.  Good news is it offers a turbocharged, 1.8-liter four cylinder and many other claimed upgrades.  It seems that this car could be ready for track duty with minimal investment, but does it qualify for vintage racing?

The confusing part of this ad is the subwoofer box – how does that fit with the apparent track car theme?

Here’s a link to a a cool letter sent to dealer about the Sidewinder II.

The vintage combination of Bosch K-Jet mechanical fuel injection and a pull-through turbo setup is cool, but I wonder how much of a nightmare it is to tune…
