Celebrate the 1972 Munich Olympics in Style!

You’ll just have to get through a full restoration to get the style part.  For the 1972 model year, Ford offered a Sprint package on the Pinto, Maverick and Mustang.  Both had white-over-blue paint with a red separating stripe, steel wheels with trim rings and “poverty dish” hubcaps with a matching blue stripe and a USA olympic decal on the quarter panel.  The interiors had a matching color scheme, as well.

Our feature car should be the most desirable of the Mavericks, as it has a 302 V8 (the biggest engine ever in a Maverick) and four-speed manual, but it’s in need of a lot of attention.

The seller claims this car runs and drives well.  You could feasibly stop further rust and drive this is a ‘preserved’ car, which would actually be somewhat entertaining.  Or, one could assess the cost of interior bits, body work, paint and some under-hood cleanup and embark on a modest restoration.  Given it is a V8, four-speed Sprint, it might even pay off some day.

I’d love to do the mild fix-up and add a few hidden engine mods to make this a screamer.  Apparently, upholstery is available, so that’s good news.

Seller claims minimal rust-through and the body does indeed look pretty straight.

I think the quarter panel decal is long gone on this one.  It’s probably still available, however, given the volume of Mustangs sharing parts.

Interior is tired, but the four-speed and bench combo is pretty awesome.  The steering wheel is exactly the same as that in my 1970 Mustang.  Also, I spy a graphic equalizer!

This vehicle has a trunk.

Tough call – clean up and refinish or leave the engine compartment ‘rustic’?

1972 Ford Maverick Sprint Olympic Edition. Factory 302. 4-speed. Runs perfect. Drives good on the road. All original. Had 2 paint jobs. Has original red white and blue underneath, then someone painted it blue, and then was repainted back to red white and blue about 8- 10 years ago. But if you strip it down the body is all straight. It has not been in any accidents. Needs everything but not the drive train, it’s perfect. Underneath the car is not rusted out but it’s not perfect. It’s in good shape. has a couple of holes. It was raining today so could not get pics as could not lay on the ground. Has new battery, new oil change, new partial tune up, new fuel pump. Does not leak or drip. Tires are dry rotted but in good shape. This car also has optional power steering on it. Drive any where. It’s not pretty but it is reliable. It is a running fool and still burns rubber. I have the original hood, but it was badly rusted on the front.  Needs a new trunk lid.

Don’t ask and bid to own. If you want to come see it and hear it run, that’s fine but the inspection sticker is out, so won’t be able to drive it on the road.

Thought I should make it known that this car did not originally come from New York. It hasn’t seen one winter in NY yet. A lot of people are asking how much I want for this. Please don’t ask, bid what you are willing to pay and when it turns green you will be an owner. I am not trying to be mean, I’m just too old and ill health to play games. I actually have a lot of fun driving this. It took me a long time to find a 4 speed car that was as rare and original as this. It has a very reasonable reserve for a rare, possibly one off 4 speed car. I believe in the future this car will have an astronomical price tag.

The dark spots all over the car are an old blue paint job, not rust. The rust in the cat I already took a grinder to it and exposed it. The rest of the car is solid and underneath the car the only hole  I can find is on the passenger side foot and I show it in the pictures and of course someone painted it white and did a Tijuana job on it as it didn’t last. Fun to drive. Thanks.
