For the 1974 Model Year, Ford went from borderline land yacht sized Mustangs to a true compact for the fuel crisis era. Thus was born the oft-maligned Mustang II.
I, your humble host, had a 1970 Mustang as my first car and I own one again. Growing up a Mustang guy (later branching off into true automotive weirdness), I generally thought little of the Mustang II. It shared a platform with the Pinto, after all, and had mid-to-late 70s, choked-down engines.
Collectors have started to get somewhat interested in the rarer and higher-optioned Mustang IIs – mostly the Cobras and Machs; and I must admit I’ve warmed up to the car a little. Maybe because it represents the malaise era so perfectly or maybe because, to these eyes, it offers an interesting combination of diminutive size and 70s styling – usually reserved for much bigger cars.
This example is a claimed low-mileage coupe with a V8 and, unfortunately, an automatic trans. The asking price might be a bit much for a Deuce, but it’s very low in comparison for any Mustang that came before it. This would present a dilemma, as the best bet for fun in a II is to hop up the engine, but this car may be too original to modify. I wouldn’t likely buy this, but if I inherited it, I’d find ways to do hidden engine and suspension mods to keep it looking bone stock, yet unleash some real power, torque and handling.

The coupe version of this car has a shrunken Torino look. Oddly, I find it pretty cool.
Profile shows attempts to tie to Mustang heritage, yet with 70s flair and compact dimensions.
Rear end screams “Pinto with a trunk.”
Ah, the days of full-color interiors. I miss them. This appears to be in pretty great shape.
Not much exciting in the gauge layout, but it’s functional. Note the automatic shifter.
Yes, this has a tach!
Don’t try to sit back here.
Don’t try to carry a big cooler, either.
Here’s the 100-ish horsepower 302 V8.

One response to “Don’t Forget Me. I’m a Mustang, Too.”
Although pricey, it seems seriously clean and well cared for. And as the adage goes, "Where are ya gonna find another?"
