Stories about the wedge-shaped Subaru XT come up periodically, but Subaru’s interesting technology also found its way into more pedestrian sedans and hatchbacks. Our subject car is a 1988 RX Turbo, which was the performance version of the GL/Loyale. This car not only offered a turbocharged four-cylinder and all-wheel-drive, it also had a low range and locking diff!
This car appears to be in great shape. The selling dealer includes a slideshow with many, many pictures, and rust isn’t evident. That would be our biggest concern, given this car’s New York location. The car has about 190K miles, which doesn’t seem like a lot for a Subie.
The 1.8-liter H4 won’t blow your mind with 115HP, but the 134 lb-ft of torque likely makes it fun, and that’s about a 30% increase over the naturally aspirated version of this engine. This price isn’t dirt cheap, but the condition here is good and these don’t come along often.

As was typical in the 80s, this car has no lack of decals.
This car lacks the goofy electronic dash from the XT and is a more typical 80s Japanese interior. This doesn’t look bad at all.
Yep, it has a two-speed transfer case and locking diff (presumably the rear)!
Here’s the turbocharged 1.8 liter flat four. Spare tire location is pretty cool and made possible, in this case, but the horizontally opposed engine.
