Salvageable ASC McLaren Mustang?

The ASC McLaren Mustang was an interesting car, as it’s a bit hard to define its purpose.  Originally, ASC converted Fox body Mercury Capris into convertibles – something that made some sense, given a convertible was never offered by the factory.  Later, however, they took to modifying Mustang convertibles with a different top, more raked windscreen, two-seat interior conversion with unique leather, unique wheels and a few other exterior touches.

These cars always looked cool and carried some cache, but they had absolutely no mechanical upgrades and most were automatics.  With that, they had little to no credibility with performance enthusiasts.

This car is one of the few later model year examples with a five-speed manual trans, so it’s got that going for it.  The not-so-good news is it’s been sitting for ten year, is not running and has been repainted.  It seems it also had incorrect upholstery installed.

With non asking price, we can’t say whether it’s a good deal.  Knowing interior bits will be almost impossible to find, what would you offer to take on this project?  Is this car worthy of saving?  I think it’s a cool bit of history, but I’d like a really good idea of what it would take to get it running before coming up with an offer.

The body looks pretty good here – the damage behind the front wheel opening might be in the plastic and might not have affected an ASC-specific piece (?).  These aren’t stock Mustang wheels, but they’re not correct ASC/McLaren wheels, either.

The top is likely original, what with the trashed window.  A quick search showed that replacement tops for these cars CAN be found, even in dark blue.

Paint is not exactly perfect, but the hard-to-find plastic is present.

The seller claims this car had a white interior, but I don’t know how many parts were originally white.  The seats might actually be original, so it might be possible to have something made to look original.

The good news is the shifter.  The bad news is the homemade console.  Why?

Things look neglected under the hood, which is consistent with the seller’s story.  But, hey, it has some sort of K&N-type filter!

Not running been sitting covered for 10 years Super Rare!!! What I am speaking of is a 1990 Mustang ASC McLaren which I am sure you are aware of only 65 cars were produced. What makes this particular car extremely special is it’s one of the only five 5-speed manual transmission cars that were produced that year. It originally was the keweenau white blue roof with white interior as seen on the production list, you can see by the attached pictures it has has a little facelift over the years. The vin is 1FACP40E8LF132894, Sandy Block out of New Jersey (I’m sure you know of him) before his untimely passing spoke to me and confirmed that this was the car. He was able to tell me the car was originally sold to a gentleman in Santa Barbara new shipped to him. *Please make offer*
