Semi-Based, Big-Nose Pickup

Apparently, one can take a 1963 Autocar semi truck cab and hood and mate than to a bed on a one-ton Chevy frame.  We know this only because the result is today’s feature Oddimobile.

What’s an Autocar, you ask?  Apparently, the automaker started in Pennsylvania in 1897 with cars and became a truck-only company as of 1912.  Though it has changed hands, the brand is still around in the garbage/recycling truck industry.  Why not celebrate that heritage with a strange, custom vehicle?

For better or worse, there is not a giant diesel under that hood.  This beast is now powered by a 350 Chevy.  The owner was building it up with a twin turbo setup, which is included in the sale, but it not yet installed.

Whether or not the reserve is not, the market will speak to the value here.  This one’s hard to call.

From the front, this almost looks like it could be a stock vehicle of some sort.

The metal work looks good from the back, but the tail lights let it down a bit.

Interior appears to be all custom, including the rather interesting custom wood (or wood-like) flooring.

Gauge layout is a bit odd, with the largest (speedo?) in the center.

Here’s a quick view of the engine.

Clear Texas title- titled as a 1963 Autocar pickup. Local pickup in San Marcos Texas or you arrange the shipping and I cooperate.

1963 Autocar DC-7564 Semi Truck cab and hood- It is made of thick metal and very solid/straight.  The body is on a modified Chevy 1 ton chassis. It weighs 4900 Pounds.  This truck runs good, drives good, stops on a dime,  and also comes with a complete twin turbo kit and some other parts. The extra parts are all brand new. Lots of good stuff.

Engine- Chevy 350- has a new serpentine belt, one wire alternator, new chrome timing chain cover and seal, new water pump seal, new chrome alternator, new belt tensioner, new oil pan gasket, demon blow thru carb (700 dollar carb), polished intake manifold, stainless steel braided spark plug wires. Also has a new melling high flow oil pump and HEI distributor with black cap.

Transmission- TH400 automatic with a B&M shifter, good seals, clean fluid. The top bell housing bolts can be accessed through the engine bay. It has a chrome torque converter cover.

Rear end- Chevy dually, solid, 14 bolt rear end with chrome cover, painted drum brake backplates. New Timken 2081 seals, working parking brake.

Exhaust- T3 turbo headers with modular 3″ v-band exhaust (expensive).

Cooling- flex fan, polished hi flow long water pump, 190degree thermostat, good radiator, doesn’t overheat or leak.

Bed- custom fabricated from thick metal. The rear fender flares are from a Chevy apache, and mounted firm. There is a steel framed bed cover which is hinged behind the cab and has new wood painted brown. Fuel cell in bed. I have an original “Autocar Diesel” emblem that is 20 inches long. It would look good on that flat part above the license plate.

Steering- has nice and light power steering, tilt Chevy steering column with working switches. New stainless steel/mahogany steering wheel. Chevy bowtie engraved on the horn button. New tie rods, ball joints and some other suspension parts.

Brakes- master cylinder mounted on frame and has access panel from inside the cab, good brake booster with new silicone vacuum hose, rebuilt drum brakes with thick material, new fluid, thick front brake pads with good rotors. It brakes smooth without any wheel shake or pedal pulse. Has a brake proportioning valve adjustable from inside the cab.

Lights – all of them work.

Cab/body- two bucket seats, wood floor, seat belts, all five gauges on the dash work, as do the turn signal indicators. It also has power windows in the doors and back of the cab. New pioneer cd player, no speakers yet. New hood latches with spares. Has a receiver hitch for towing and working wire harness for trailer lights.

Tires- All four tires are in good shape, hold air, and have good tread. 1 Spare tire & wheel included.

Electrical- I use heat shrink tubing everywhere, with solid crimps and quality connectors of correct size.

The door glass is cracked and needs to be replaced. The windows are still in place, go up and down smoothly, and keep out the rain, but will need to be replaced. The front windows and rear window are good.
