Sleeper potential

Volvo 142s and 240s are often modded, whether it’s rally-style or an engine swap.  Here we have a 1974 164E, which was closely related to the 140 series, but had a luxury-oriented front end and an inline six tuned for comfy cruising more than spirited driving.

This one, however, has triple carbs, hot cam and a manual w/overdrive. The seller states that the setup needs tuning, but this could be an opportunity for someone with the skills to finish it.  The price isn’t crazy if there’s no rust and not too many trim pieces are missing.  Your humble host had to prematurely part with a ’74 142 project just about a year ago due to relocation and these old Volvo bricks will always have a certain appeal.

05/16/2013 update: Seems to have ended unsold…

Front end was unique to the 164, but the overall profile is hard to distinguish from a 140.
Looks just like a 140 from this angle.
Interior was basically the same as a loaded 140 (142 or 144 GL).  These later cars had a shorter shifter, better positioned vs. the old  under-dash unit in the early cars.  Small, center-mounted tach is visible here.

We’re not sure what happened here – there is a fuel door on the right rear fender, just like there should be.  Red cap is likely original.  Is this an auxiliary tank?

There’s the inline six and the triple carbs.  This ’74 would have been fuel injected originally, so it’s not hard to imagine that was yanked in favor of something simpler. That being said, the 164E was at least spared the K-Jet mechanical system that the 140s got in ’74…it had MegaSquirt potential before they yanked out the FI.

This listing is for my 1974 Volvo 164E vintage sedan.  4 was produced from 1969 to 1975 and was the luxury sedan built to compete with Mercedes Benz.  This car has the B30 Inline 6 Cyclinder 3.0L engine.
This car has a new clutch and a 4 speed manual transmission w/ electric overdrive.  I have owned this car since 2001 and it was my daily driver for four years before undergoing a restoration.  This restoration included a rebuilt head and bottom end.  I have repainted the car white and replaced the windshield in the last 2 years.  There are a few drips in the paint that need to be sanded out before final polishing. This car runs and drives, but it does have a couple issues that need to be addressed.  This car has had triple Solex Down Draft Carbs fitted in place of the original SU side draft carbs.  These have not been correctly tuned.  Second, the distributor needs to have heavier springs installed in the mechanical advance mechanism.  This car comes with a clean title.  Tires are Fuzion HRi with about 90% tread.
This car has a custom ground cam from Eagle cams.  This car comes with all reciepts and information including original owners manual.
There are some spares included with this car:
Spare Transmission w/ overdrive
Spare Cylinder head (condition unknown)
Spare Wheel
Stock Intake Manifold w/ SU carbs (HS6 Carbs)
This car would make a very interesting project for a motor swap or to sort out the existing the system. This car will need a little bit of work and it does have little issues like any 39 year old car.  It pains me to sell this car as it really is a cool project, but I have too many projects as it is and I do not have the space to keep them.  Please see the photos for more details.
