SuperHawk: 1977 Buick Skyhawk with Grand National Power

The first-generation Buick Skyhawk was a V6-powered, slightly upscale derivative of the Chevy Monza. These aren’t the worst bones from which to start, but the late-70s GM 3.8L V6 was no powerhouse. Somewhere along the line, an owner of today’s feature car swapped in a turbocharged V6 from a Buick Grand National. We support this decision.

If you’re on this site, you know that the mid-to-late 1980s turbo Buicks were monsters when pointed in a straight line and, of course, were easy to modify. This car has mods and the seller claims 500HP, which is certainly possible with this engine, though we’d love to see dyno figures to get an idea of how the power is delivered, not to mention all of the torques.

According to the ad, this car has had some chassis tweaks to assist in dealing with what is likely monster torque. Quite frankly, we love this car and hope it finds a loving home! Bidding is very near the $16K buy-it-now price, so we wonder if someone will pull the trigger on it before the bids go over that amount. If this is built as well as the seller claims, we think that’s a bit of a deal.

Some mods are visible, but we like the fact that they aren’t too obvious.

Relatively subtle theme continues out back, where it’s hard to tell this apart from a Monza.

Much of the interior is stock and we absolutely love the houndstooth!

Aftermarket gauges are nestled in the stock location, with an a-pillar pod mounted. That’s the stock steering wheel, but it’s wearing a Pep Boys cover.

Hatch offers decent space, even with the overdone subwoofer box. Hopefully, that has some resale value and those funds can be put toward stock-looking wheels.

Turbo V6 is supposedly rather built up but doesn’t look too out of place in this car. These can make serious power.
