When Saleen made SUVs

It’s the turn of the millennium, and gas is a buck a gallon.  SUVs are at peak popularity, and everyone knows someone with a Ford Explorer.  Of course, that infamous that little Firestone incident hasn’t rolled over yet.

We know Saleen for their wicked tuned Mustangs, but few remember the rarest Saleen of them all–the XP8.

Okay, I lied.  The rarest is actually the XP6, of which the whereabouts of only six are known.  When Saleen ordered V8 Explorers to outfit into XP8s, Ford accidentally sent several V6s.  Rarer isn’t necessarily better.

Back to this one-of-125 XP8.  Leave it to LA craigslist to gift us a trademark white, final-year 00-28 which, after over 200k miles, still inexplicably wears the original white Saleen wheels.  They were made of genuine unobtanium or magnesium or something like that.

Racecraft suspension lowered the truck by two inches, while four-piston calipers were later recalled in favor of stock Ford brakes due to lack of “structural integrity.”

No talk of the whether big-ticket options, critical to me and the four other XP8 enthusiasts out there, are installed.  Powerdyne supercharger, Recaro seats, carbon fiber hood, and carbon fiber interior trim were all available for hefty fees.

Likewise, no mention of condition, maintenance records, or more than one lonely picture.  That said, this is the lowest-priced complete XP8 I’ve ever seen.  Low mileage examples with all option boxes ticked can fetch nearly $20,000.
